Chess for children in Kensington and Chelsea

Chess is more than a game — it's an effective way to develop logic, attention, memory, strategic thinking and decision-making.

In lessons at First Russian School children gradually master the rules, learn to see several moves ahead and understand the consequences of their decisions. The programme is designed for children aged 4 to 14, and the school is a two-minute walk from Sloane Square station.

What children learn

  • the rules and fundamentals of chess

  • what each piece can do

  • chess combinations

  • tactics and strategy

  • opening development

  • analysing their own games

  • solving chess puzzles

  • playing practice games and mini-tournaments

Developing how children think

While playing, a child learns to concentrate, plan, weigh up options and look calmly for a solution.

Chess builds perseverance and independence, and teaches children to handle both winning and losing with grace.

From first moves to a strategy of their own

The programme suits children of all levels.

Beginners start with the rules and basic principles, while more experienced pupils work on combinations, tactical problems and building a playing strategy of their own. Lessons are taught in Russian, so children train their thinking and keep up their language skills at the same time.
