Reading & Speech Development

In these lessons children learn to read for meaning, understand what a text is about and express their thoughts freely in Russian. Our focus is not reading speed but comprehension, a growing vocabulary and connected, expressive speech.

What children do in lessons

• learn to read syllables, words and sentences

• develop reading fluency and comprehension

• answer questions about a text

• retell and discuss what they have read

• expand their active vocabulary

• learn to build stories from pictures

• describe events, characters and their own impressions

• form complete, grammatically correct sentences

• develop memory, attention and imagination

Learning to speak with confidence

For bilingual children it is especially important to use Russian regularly in real conversation. So we talk a great deal in lessons, discussing subjects children already know — family, school, transport, nature, fruit and vegetables, the seasons, holidays and the world around them.

Children learn to ask questions, hold a conversation, describe events and express their own opinions.

Reading for pleasure

We choose books and texts to match each child's age and level, so that reading gradually becomes a pleasure rather than a duty.

The school also has a library with a large collection of Russian books that children can borrow for extra reading.

Reading for meaning

A child doesn't simply read the words — they understand the content, answer questions and learn to reason.

Rich, connected speech

Through reading, discussion and playful tasks, children gradually begin to speak Russian more freely, precisely and confidently.
