I teach Russian, and in my lessons the language isn't a set of rules but a living tool for communication, thinking and creativity. In my work I draw on elements of the Samatova method, communicative and play-based approaches, and techniques such as visual reading, storytelling and associative memorisation. This works particularly well for bilingual children: rather than simply completing exercises, a child learns to understand Russian, speak more freely, read and express their thoughts. We work with texts, discuss what we've read, build stories together and use flashcards, illustrations, speaking games and creative tasks. New vocabulary goes straight into use in speech, and grammar is taught through clear examples and practice rather than rote learning. I pay particular attention to reading with understanding: a child learns not only to read a text correctly, but to grasp its meaning, identify the main idea, answer questions, retell it and reason about it. Every child develops at their own pace, so the programme is tailored individually, taking account of age, level of Russian and the pupil's particular strengths. My main aim is for a child not to be afraid of Russian, but to want to speak it, read it and discover new things through it.
